A riveting lunar experience.
It is, quite simply, terrific, good enough to
warrant repeated viewings. Taipei Times

A lunar halo appears when the moonlight is refracted by 22 degrees through millions of ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, while in ancient folklore, it is also a sign foreboding something ominous is going to happen....

In collaboration with Sigur Rós and Kjartan Holm in music, CHENG Tsung-lung, uses this natural phenomenon to create LUNAR HALO, raising a major question of our own existence to this fast-changing digital world: Do we still need our physical bodies and senses if we only use our eyes and fingertips for experience?

While images and videos are displayed by three large, luminescent LED screens, dancers morph into concrete symbols of struggles, desires, loneliness, hope, and love. LUNAR HALO provokes strong physiological arousal, making all our senses vibrate, and generates an exotic universe of bodily beauty and intellectual anxiety. 50,000 people dance at Cloud Gate outdoor performance

Revered around the world, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan has stunned and mesmerized the audience with works, by its founder Lin Hwai-min, that transforms ancient aesthetics into modern celebration of motion. After 46 glorious years of directing the company, Lin stepped down as artistic director last December.

Presented by Cathay Arts Festival, the outdoor performance of Lin Hwai-min: A Retrospective on July 27, 2019 marks Lin’s last appearance with the company in such event. 50,000 people packed the Liberty Plaza, Taipei, to bid farewell to him. They raved about the exquisite performance of dancers from Cloud Gate, winner of “the outstanding company award” of the British National Dance Awards, and joyfully danced together at the intermission.

This moving documentary captures the beauty of dancing and emotions of the audience in an evening of spectacular mass gathering. It will be available for viewing from July 18 Sat. at 8pm GMT+8 until July 25 Sat. on YouTube. Choreographies by Lin Hwai-min with lighting re-designed by Lulu W.L. Lee according to the original concept, while sets are simplified for the purpose of program flow.

THE NEW YORK TIMES

In July 2019, The New York Times presented a full page about Cloud Gate’s outdoor performance, supported by Cathay Financial Holdings.

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan

Cloud Gate is the name of the oldest known dance in China. In 1973, choreographer LIN Hwai-min adopted this classical name and founded the first contemporary dance company in the greater Chinese-speaking community. In 2020, CHENG Tsung-lung succeeded LIN as the company's Artistic Director.

Cloud Gate dancers receive training in meditation; Qi Gong, an ancient breathing exercise; internal martial arts; modern dance; and ballet. Manifesting in choreographies, the company transforms ancient aesthetics into a thrilling and modern celebration of motion.

Cloud Gate has toured worldwide with frequent engagements at the Next Wave Festival in New York, the Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, the Moscow Chekhov International Theatre Festival in Russia, the Movimentos International Dance Festival and the Internationales Tanzfest NRW directed by Pina Bausch in Germany. International press acclaims the company as “Asia's leading contemporary dance theater” (The Times), and “One of the best dance companies in the world” (FAZ). Cloud Gate is the winner of the “Outstanding Company” for the 2018 National Dance Awards, UK.

LIN Hwai-min founded Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan in 1973 and has led the company to international prominence through his thrilling creations that transform Asian aesthetics into contemporary celebration of motion.

Among the honors LIN Hwai-min has received are Samuel H. Scripps / American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement; the John D. Rockefeller Award, New York; the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters, France; and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Movimentos Dance Festival, Germany. He has also been celebrated by Time magazine as one of “Asia's Heroes”.

At the end of 2019, LIN Hwai-min stepped down as the Artistic Director of Cloud Gate and handed the reins of the company to CHENG Tsung-lung.

From street hawker selling slippers to internationally recognized choreographer, CHENG Tsung-lung succeeded LIN Hwai-min as Artistic Director of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan starting 2020.

He had won top prizes in international choreography competitions, including the Premio Roma Danza International Choreography Competition, and became widely known in the dance world for breathtaking works inspired by the street life and folk religion that was part of his upbringing in the oldest commercial district of Taipei.

CHENG's works exude a humble beauty rooted in Asian culture. His 13 Tongues (2016), incorporating folk steps, religious rites and Taoist chanting into a contemporary expression, has received raving reviews from France, Germany, and China. French media credited it as “a triumph...appealing to the eyes.” Full Moon (2017), commissioned by Sydney Dance Company, has been acclaimed in Paris and Sydney. Set to the music specially arranged by Sigur Rós and hailed as a work of “fierce beauty,” Lunar Halo (2019) brought the house down in its premiere season and garnered invitations from worldwide.
